Academic Profile
| Professor Steven Shardlow
joined the School in 2001, and was appointed foundation
holder of the newly established Chair of Social Work.
Previously, he has: directed a university post-graduate
social work programme; managed a multi-disciplinary
health and social care practice team in a local authority;
and practised field and residential social work.
Prof. Shardlow is Director of the Salford
Centre for Social Work Research and Associate Head of
School (Research). He has published over one hundred
scholarly publications (including more than ten books).
A previous chairperson of The Association of Teachers
of Social Work Education (ATSWE): currently, he is the
UK representative on the Executive Committee of the
European Association of Schools of Social Work (EASSW)
and is the founder Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of
Social Work.
Prof. Shardlow holds the following academic
and professional qualifications: MA (Oxon); MSc Applied
Social Studies (Oxon); CQSW (CCETSW); AASW (GSCC). |
Teaching
Prof. Shardlow is a member of the Institute
of Teaching and Learning (ILT).
In the past, his teaching has included
the following aspects of social work, Professional Ethics;
Comparative Social Work; Social work with Children and
Families (including Child Protection); Principles and
Practice of Social Work; Community Care and Work in Organizations;
The History of Social Work; Professional learning (including,
assessment of students; methods of teaching and theories
of learning).
At the present time, his teaching consists
of mainly of supervising research students or contributing
to the MRes in Health and Social Care.
Prof. Shardlow welcomes applications from
any post-graduates who are interested in studying for
a PhD in the field of social work. |
Research
Steven's research interests are broadly
based, grounded in inter-disciplinarily, and span the
disciplines of social work and the social professions,
encompassing policy, practice, planning, theory and education.
Particular and specific interests professions include:
professional ethics; evaluation of practice (evidence-based
practice); international and comparative social work theory
and practice, professional education (especially practice
learning).He has worked extensively on a variety of European
research and development projects, been a consultant to
several East European governments and has published widely
